Before bow ties were invented and shirts did not have top buttons to keep the collars together, men would tie scarves around their neck to fill in the gap. By the end of the 1800's the bow tie was invented and was a standard black tie formal look.
While hand tying a bow tie can be complicated, we have created this step by step guide and with a little practice, you will be an expert!
Here are some other tips to accessorizing with a bow tie:
- Find the right size - a standard 2” butterfly bow tie will work in most any occasion.
- Pick the right fabric – shiny fabrics like silk are dressier but play around with other fabric options like cotton or linen.
- Wear the right dress shirt – your dress shirt should fit comfortably without there being too much space between your skin and the fabric.
